Sharon Duymel
Sharon Duymel (b.1971 Utrecht, The Netherlands) an Auckland-based artist, graduated with an MFA from Whitecliffe College of Arts, in 2022.
Duymel’s practice is concerned with exploring the problematic space of being unable to use her voice. Whilst reflecting the internalisation of her own identity, Sharon attempts to translate the complexities of the interior mind by giving a psychological reading, through the physicality of the body. She often uses the female form to invoke her female perspective of lived experience.
Sharon seeks to carve out her own space to speak about female agency, in an effort to raise awareness of her experiences and challenges as a woman today.
Sharon Duymel’s work MotherMother II has recently been selected as a finalist in the 2023 Parkin Drawing Prize at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Art in Wellington.
Pathos was selected to form the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award Painting and Drawing 2023 Finalists’ Exhibition in the Whakatane Exhibition Centre.
Pathos (Nude), selected as a finalist in Naked & Nude Art Prize 2023 at the Manning Regional Art Gallery, Manning, NSW, Australia.
Duymel has exhibited her work widely throughout New Zealand. Her work is represented in private collections in New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore, Japan and the USA.
Public collections include the Parliamentary Collection, Wellington, The New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington.

I aim to address the complexities of
contemporary female representation and experiences through figurative
painting. My works explore the relationship between myself as an artist, my
role as a daughter, as a woman and a mother, thereby investigating female
agency within society. I am interested in the multiple versions of constructed
identities required of women today and how, in each role and relationship,
a woman may behave differently in response to each situation. I use my
own subjective experience as an anchor to depict how strength, capability
and achievement can share a voice within these societal constructs.
