Anna Leyland is a contemporary New Zealand artist known for her distinctive work in painting. Through intricate pattern-making and symbolism, her art celebrates the rich diversity of Aotearoa, reflecting the inclusive social ethos of New Zealand.
Anna’s art is inspired by her and her son’s multicultural background—including Hungarian, Scottish, Fijian, Wallisian, Futunaan, English, and Kiwi influences. She incorporates symbols and patterns from these cultures into her own unique style, making her work rich in cultural diversity and appealing to a broad audience.
Leyland’s unique style merges contrasting elements, blending masculine and feminine energies, natural forms with abstract thought, and simple concepts with complex designs. Her meticulous masking techniques and layered geometric patterns create striking optical effects, often enhanced by the use of metallic paints that add a sense of lustre and opulence.
Since 2001, Leyland has exhibited in over 30 exhibitions, solidifying her place in the New Zealand art scene. Her work has also been commissioned by prominent brands and organisations, including Nespresso, Auckland City Council, Orcon, The Big Hoot, and Sofitel Queenstown.
