Sonja Drake
Sonja Drake is a Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland artist whose practice explores the relationships between people, place, and the living ecologies that sustain us. Her paintings and drawings emerge from sustained engagement with place, close observation, and research.
Grounded in the waterways and estuaries of Tāmaki Makaurau, her work engages with memory, environmental change, and the traces of human activity held within soil, sediment, and water. Drawing on processes that echo the rhythms and layering of nature, she creates artworks as spaces for reconnection, inviting viewers to experience how it feels to be there and to reflect on our place within the living world.
Sonja holds a Master of Fine Arts (Honours) from Whitecliffe and is the recipient of the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award Premier Award.
