Sonja Drake

Sonja Drake is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland whose work explores the relationships between people, place, and the living world.

Grounded in the waterways and estuaries of Tāmaki Makaurau, her paintings and drawings are shaped by research, close observation, and sustained engagement with place. Her work investigates memory, environmental change, and the traces of human activity held within soil, sediment, and water.

Through her art, she seeks to cultivate attention and reverence for the places that sustain us, encouraging a deeper relationship with the living world.

Sonja holds a Master of Fine Arts (Honours) from Whitecliffe and is the recipient of the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award Premier Award.
