Jo Gallagher
Jo Gallagher is a contemporary New Zealand artist whose practice spans more than two decades. After many years living and working on a farm in the King Country, she has recently relocated to the coastal community of Raglan, where she continues to draw deeply from the people, places, language and visual culture that shape her experience of Aotearoa.
Jo’s work moves fluidly across a diverse range of subject matter, from vibrant contemporary florals to explorations of national identity and fashion inspired by the distinctive style of the 1970s. Native birds frequently appear within her paintings, bringing another layer of meaning and narrative to her compositions.
Words and phrases are often the starting point for Jo’s work. A particular expression, idea or turn of phrase can spark the concept for a painting, which then evolves through her distinctive layering process. Working primarily in acrylic, she builds her surfaces through multiple layers creating depth, pattern and visual intrigue.
Jo’s work is exhibited in galleries throughout New Zealand and held in private collections across New Zealand and internationally.
